We make that distinction because a large and increasing number of "bands" - commonly trios, duos and even solo artists - use off-the-shelf MIDI (computer) files or MiniDisc recordings as backing, basically singing and playing (or appearing to play ... ) over these. 

While there are undoubtedly some who put a lot of time and effort into creating a decent sound, and have the crucial talent and experience necessary to skilfully handle an audience, many others are little more than glorified karaoke.
